A Reflection on the Recent Cyclosporiasis Cases
The recent cyclosporiasis cases are a reminder that food supply chains can become vulnerable when too many businesses depend on the same source.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. It can contaminate fresh produce through unsafe water or unsanitary conditions during growing, harvesting, or handling. The FDA and CDC investigation is still ongoing, but the situation already highlights how quickly one disruption can spread through a large distribution network.
This is not about assigning blame. Large farms are not automatically unsafe, and small farms are not immune from risk. Food safety requires care at every level.
Why Local Relationships Matter to Us
At 2fifty, we have chosen to build much of our sourcing around local farmers and direct relationships, including producers such as ECO City Farms and farmers from the Riverdale Park Farmers Market. We adapt our menus to the seasons and seek to source nearby whenever possible.
These relationships support our local agricultural community, give us access to fresh ingredients, and create greater transparency. We know who grew our produce, when it was harvested, and how it reached our kitchen.
That connection also makes our supply chain more resilient. By sourcing from different producers, we are less dependent on a single national network and better prepared to respond when disruptions occur.
A Commitment That Began Long Ago
We do not believe local automatically means safer. Every food system requires diligence.
We do believe that diversity, proximity, transparency, and strong relationships create a more resilient way of working.
This philosophy has always been part of 2fifty. Great barbecue begins long before the smoker. It begins in the soil, with the people who grow our food, and with the choices we make about where our ingredients come from.
The recent cases reinforce a belief we have held from the beginning: supporting local farmers and building transparent relationships may not always be the easiest path, but it helps strengthen our community and our food system.
The 2fifty Team.
